Lawrence David MacLean, Q.C.

On April 18, 2010 we lost our friend and colleague, Lawrence David MacLean, Q.C.  Justice MacLean was counsel to the firm from his retirement in 2002 as a Justice of the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench, until his passing.

Justice MacLean was born in Pincher Creek, Alberta on June 30, 1927.  He graduated from the University of Alberta in 1949 with a B.A. in philosophy and then in 1952 with an LL.B..  He articled in Lethbridge with Gilbert C. Patterson and was admitted to the bar on June 8, 1953.  His law practice included real estate, divorce and damage actions, criminal and civil jury trials, and appearances before numerous and varied administrative tribunals. He was named Q.C. in 1969.

In 1978 Justice MacLean  was appointed to the bench of the Trial Division of the Supreme Court of Alberta, and, in 1979 was appointed a Justice of the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench.  As Justice he heard a broad range of civil and criminal trials and was active in presiding over many dispute resolution hearings.  He and his associate, Justice C. Yanosik, developed a trial management system of pre-trials and pre-booking that is the basis of the system currently used by the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench.

During his time at the firm, Justice MacLean enriched both our professional and personal lives.  We greatly value and dearly miss his contributions to the firm.
